DIGITAL & TILE MEMORIALThe memorial would consist of tiles designed digitally during group workshop sessions by each participants of the project, giving all abilities and ages the opportunity to be included in the project. This is a great way of allowing the group to take ownership of the project and to truly contribute individually to the final design.
Each participant would have a piece of his or her own work in the final artwork. The advantage of working digitally are that the tiles are stored easily; meaning no storage problems and in the event of any breakage or vandalism a single tile can be replaced at very little cost.
Digital LED strips will be installed ( as seen in artist impression). They are a great way of keeping the work fresh, and are very eye catching. The LED strips can be programmed with the text changing to read any message, this could be poetry, or people’s names or messages from loved one.
The important part of this Brighton Memorial project is to spread awareness of HIV/AIDS, and create a positive piece of artwork that people will be able to enjoy.
The DAMSET aids memorial project that I am working on in Dorset has worked well as an educational tool in schools, complementing the syllabus and I believe
adding well-needed value to some of the lessons. I have facilitated more than 12 workshops for this project in different schools in Dorset. Each workshop runs for between 1 – 2 hours. My initial thoughts on how to start the project would be to take small groups of participants to develop ideas and begin the initial process and brainstorming at the beginning of the session. This would enable me and the group to start ideas flowing, getting them to think about what HIV/AIDS means to them and how it affects them both directly and indirectly. I would use visual material (video and images) to help develop thoughts and discussions in the group. We would then work on the designs of each separate tile. I would spend time with individuals, helping them to transfer their ideas into finished pieces. I see the final pieces as a mixture of both text and image, for example:
The participants would work on a template that I would provide, allowing them to visualize the space they have to work in. At the end of each session each member of the group are given a print out of their design work.
Costs: development costs: £4,860 and tile costs £8,200.
