I'm starting to wonder. Is it really homophobia when, as happened tonight on my way home from Charles Street, a group of people shouted 'gay boy' in my general direction?
Obviously, at 36 years old, I'm flattered that they used the word 'boy', and am not - after many years of much worse - very offended that they wanted to shout 'gay' at me. But it wasn't said with any particular malice. More that they were noticing something. Kind of like they might say 'penguin' to each other if they happened to pass one in the street.
Okay so - straight-acting as I might think I am - I still stick out, but I don't think there was actually any hatred or particular ill intent. More that they needed to acknowledge to each other that they had just encountered something that needed to be commented on...?

it's like that incident a few years ago when i got the "you dropped your gay card" thing. i dont think its homophobic, more bullying. it'd probably have happened if you were ginger.. "oi ginga!" or bald.. "oi baldy!" or anything that makes you different in any way. just them being narrow minded twerps.

They also probably sit in a car on long journeys and shout 'tree', 'post-box' and 'cross-country skiier'.
Were you walking past the library? Those librarians can be a bit lairy. Give them a bit of literature and soon it's all cartesian dualism and cheap paperback thrills.

I don't think it was probably meant with any particular malice either - altho that may have changed had you stopped wide eyed like a rabbit in the headlights - they were probably just more impressed with themselves that they'd managed to catch one of Brightons' more fabulous movers and shakers and (strangely) competant photgraph dodgers......

I was walking home one night and this group of lads drove past and one of them shouted at me 'you're gay!' I mean... that's not even an insult, more an observation. Good thing they reminded me I'd started to forget... I don't know what goes through their tiny minds, I've been subjected to much worse...
It's almost offensive that they couldn't be bothered to think up a proper insult!

you aint alone Sam, i get people shoutin at me out of cars (well more grunting really), cans thrown at me (sadly empty) just from cycling around town - i often wonder if i'm lookin especially like a big 'mo that day, but i think it's just dumb fuckers lookin to pick on anyone more gorgeous than them...

Sam, cut out the crap.
read morether (London) and abusive father (1950's Lancashire). Now, I can be me and I have had a lot of upport from other family members. Trouble is, family squabbles over this have now escalated due to my 'coming out'. But, I don't care. For too many years I did want 'they' wanted. Sod the biggots, and sod the crap. Got a whole new life ahead of me now, and I want a boyfriend, so will be in Soho for Soho Pride.
I've just joined Realsoho, see 'greenleaf'. I'm new to the site and just finding my way around on it. Came out eighteen months ago after years of family bitterness ( they, more than willing to take my money when it suited them but rubbished me at the same time). Homophobic mo...
Alfie, you say you got tins. Here in West London they drive around in cars and chuck eggs at you. That's not to say that it's right. At the same time, they are lower than you, on the intelligence scale that is. So go forward, smile, knowing that when it comes to intelligence, these people are simply ignorant piss-heads who couldn't shag their girlfriends, no matter how many beers they chuck down, for the simple reason that the girlfriends would rather been with their own girl friends, and I don't mean boys. Even straight girls would still rather have girly nights in with make-up and other rubbish, rather being out with a man, either gay or straight. The world is changing.

First thing Sam, at 36 I think you still are a boy..I'm 37 and I still feel like a boy, no jokes please..:)
read moreyou fancy..you are just never sure these days.
I think more and more guys are dressing in ways that a few years back only a gay would do. Fashions appear to provide straight guys that ability. Also makes life difficult when you see a guy ...
I was up in Manchester this weekend and was well out on the scene. I was very surprised at the lack of Homophobia and the friendly acceptance of what I am.
There are still a few stupid gits out there and taunts will always be part of our life. However, it could be very much worse and we should be thankful for the open way gays are in general welcomed.

No it probably wasnt specific homophobia, just very sad probably not very intelligent people thinking they are being big and clever, give them a gold star next time for their accurate observations!! xxx
