Money
The UK currency is GBP (Great Britain Pound), also known as Pound Sterling. There are 100 pence to the pound (£). The currency is made up of £50, £20, £10 and £5 notes and £2, £1, 50p, 20p, 10p and 5p coins.
Click for Google's handy online currency converter.
You’ll find major UK banks and building societies offering currency exchange in North Street and Western Road.
Smoking
Smoking has now been banned from all public buildings. You’ll find people either huddled out on the streets or in the new outside enclosures that have been specially designed to keep the smoking crowd as happy as they can be. However, please do use the ashtrays and stub bins provided and avoid a fine!
Drugs
Recreational drugs are illegal in the UK and are banded in classes for the purposes of severity of penalties and sentences for possession and for dealing. Full details of illegal drugs can be found at:
www.homeoffice.gov.uk/drugs/drugs-law/Class-a-b-c
Brighton venues do work with the Police to reduce drug crime and recreational use and will take action if you are found in possession.
Crime
Homophobic attacks are thankfully rare, but it's sensible to keep yourself safe. Sussex Police is one of the most progressive in the country and works hard with the LGBT community to keep everyone out of danger. If you do experience any problems, the LGBT liaison team is there to help you.
Weather
Whilst we can’t guarantee the sunshine, Brighton is surrounded by the South Downs with its own microclimate and can often see blue skies whilst other South East areas of England have driving rain.
For up to date information on Brighton's weather try the BBC's weather service.
