Sussex Beacon... Providing specialist HIV care

The Sussex Beacon is set on the outskirts of the city of Brighton & Hove in beautiful and tranquil landscaped grounds and in view of the South Downs. Offering a wide range of support and care services for men and women with HIV/AIDS from all over the country, it is recognised as a centre of excellence and a national resource.

2002 was the tenth anniversary of the opening of the residential services, although work to create the Sussex Beacon started well before that. Over 900 people have benefitted from the services offered by the organisation, yet funds provided by the Health Authority are not enough to cover costs. This is despite a year on year increase in the population of HIV positive individuals.

Fundraising is a major part of bridging the gap between funding and expenditure and has offered both local and national groups and individuals a way to get truly involved.

During a visit to The Sussex Beacon just before Christmas, the dedication that everyone involved has was overwhelming. Many volunteers are friends or relatives of those who have benefitted directly from the care and resources available and it is a testiment to the range of support that The Sussex Beacon offers to so many people that they give such a commitment to helping in any way they can.

There are so many ways to get involved and make a difference, not least perhaps by digging deep and contributing any money that you can, but also in committing time to organising or involving yourself in fundraising activities or offering any specialist skills that may prove helpful.

Julie Hales has taken over the very busy role or co-ordinating the fundraising activities and can offer help and practical advise in how you can go about raising funds for the Beacon, whether its holding a specific event or including a fundraising element to something you are already doing. The Sussex Beacon also have two charity shops - one in St James Street in Brighton and one on George Street, Hove - both of which offer you a way of donating unwanted goods for sale, or for you to browse for a bargain!

Julie is also on the look out for toner cartridges for recycling or old mobile phones that can help be turned into money.

REALBrighton photographers will be out in force again during the ever-growing annual Half-Marathon in February, so we hope to see you there. We will also be listing all the up and coming events which are well worth a try, and don't forget that Beacon Christmas Cards are also available in December.

Whatever you decide to do, please do something. The Sussex Beacon really is a very special place.
