When it comes to charm, The Bedford Tavern has it by the bucket load and you could be forgiven in completely forgetting you're in the city by the sea (and just a few yards from the shoreline) and rather in the middle of the countryside. This rambling traditional pub has recently been completely transformed under a new management team who have already performed miracles at sister-pub, The Brighton Tavern.

As you'd expect, there's a warm welcome to be had and the comfy interior of shiny brass, ornate oil paintings adorning the walls, squashy leather Chesterfield sofas and chairs, wood panelling, exposed beams and open fireplaces completes the snug feel. The Bedford Tavern is also purported to be Brighton's most haunted pub - every pub worth its salt should boast a ghost or two.

A proper pub means proper ales too - and you'll find a pint or Harveys, Speckled Hen and Doombar readily available, as are great daily offers on spirits, wine and shots. Food-wise there are fabulous Sunday Roasts with veggie and vegan options and a gloriously wicked selection of homemade puddings. The Bedford also likes to throw a party - so watch out for monthly themed parties - not to mention the infamous Annual Easter Bonnet Parade.
