Brighton Pride : news
The countdown is on
Tuesday, 27th July 10
The countdown is well and truly on, with less than two weeks to go to what promises to be a spectacular day for the whole city and visitors alike. The Pride Parade line up will be announced very soon. In the meantime while you wait for the full rundown of the Parade here’s a reminder of the ways you can help Pride and an update on the Main Event at Preston Park, and remember there are only 11 sleeps to go...
More ways to donate to Pride than ever
It costs over £250,000 to put on this amazing one-day event and, if it is to remain free and in the same format Pride has to have your support NOW. The message is clear – if you want Pride in Brighton & Hove to happen then put your hand in your pocket and donate now or on the day.
To make it even easier to donate to the charity Pride is thrilled to announce that there are even more ways to donate this year. In addition to bucket collectors on the Pride Parade and at the Park on Saturday 7th August, people can now donate and support the charity in the following ways:
- Online at www.justgiving.com/brightonpride/donate
- On your mobile phone by texting the word PRIDE to 70007*
- At the bars on the Park – collection buckets will be on all the bars at the park this year for you to throw your change or more into
- At the Dance tent – before entering the Main Dance tent everyone will be asked for a suggested donation of £5
- At the Pride/LGBT Student Bar – Hosted by Club Revenge who will donate all the profits from this bar equally to LGBT Student and Pride. The bar is situated in the market area near the Main Dance tent.
Plus look out for other fundraising activity at the park.
* You will be charged £3 plus one message at your standard network rate. Pride in Brighton & Hove will receive a minimum of £2.67 from each message sent. Please ask the bill payer payer's permission before texting
We need to raise around £40,000 on (before and after) the day, so please give generously and remember this is to Save Your Brighton Pride As You Know It – the future is in your hands.
There is still time to Get Involved
Pride needs your help; with less than two weeks to go this is a final call out for volunteers. Pride relies hugely on the support of volunteers. Thanks to everyone out there and our friends at The co-operative we already have an army of volunteers in place but we still need more. Pride is looking to attract volunteers from all sections of the community for 2010 and is especially keen to really diversify our volunteer workforce. Please contact 01273 775939 and pledge your time to support Pride and the work we do.
Your Walk Around the Park
For many the park event is the main focus – it is expected to attract more than 150,000 people. There will be plenty to do with the return of all your favourite tents, market areas, community stalls and bars and Pride is delighted to announce a few new areas on site this year.
What’s new this year...
- The International Production Youth Network is proud to support the new Youth Space at Preston Park. The area will have two Allsorts outreach workers who will host a relaxed seated area in the tent between 12-4pm. They will be a listening ear, and will be able to advise young people of support available to them. A Chill-Out area including a small sound system with an iPod hook up facility. Plus there will be live graffiti workshops by a local team of respected graffiti artists, who regularly work with youth groups around Brighton and Hove. Look out for the fantastic rainbow striped tent in the Heart of the Park - overlooking the Community Platform.
- For the first time there will be a dedicated Community Platform. Thanks to the extreme generosity of Pink Punters, the platform is a celebration of LGBT talent and positive messages. As well as a packed programme of community performances and a host of special speakers, the walkers from the parade will lead right into the park to the Community Platform, where the Reverend Debbie Gaston will bless the Heart of the Park.
Pink Punters nightclub who are also responsible for the fantastic stage set up in Leicester Square for Pride London, are donating the Community Platform production set-up to the LGBT Community for Pride this year. This will include full staging, sound, lighting and crew requirements required for installation, management and full de-rig.
If you and/or your organisation would like to take part, perform or speak there is still time. Anyone wishing to perform or contribute in anyway - please send an email to:
Suggestions of type of slots/performances:
- Short speeches/talks: to convey messages to the Brighton LGBT community. This could be a description of your service, what Pride means to you/your organisation, activist messages etc- ultimately it is up to you.
- Footage that can be played on the screen: screen to be positioned next to the Community Platform stage: (to sync up together for a fuller and more impactful performance.
- performances on the stage
- Messaging to go on the screen: if you are feeling a bit shy but would like to send a message out from your organisation, or if you are not able to be there on the day.
- Parade Performance: if you are taking part in the parade and have a dance sequence, music performance as part of this, would you like to showcase this.
Anyone wishing to perform or contribute in anyway please email
- Right next to the Community Platform you’ll find the big screen. If you missed the fun of the Pride Parade or want to check out what your costume looked like then you will be able to see re-runs. There will also be cameras on the park, so there won’t be an excuse for missing a thing. Plus messages are already pouring in from Pride’s and supporters from all over the world – we can’t wait to share them with you!
- New sponsor's Ford Motor Company, will be bringing some four wheel magic to the park for us all to drool over.
- For the first time local faith groups are coming together to host a Multi Faith Area. There will be a short interfaith service early in the afternoon to which all are welcome. A place where people with a spiritual interest can find out more of what’s available in Brighton & Hove for them.
- A brand new Family Area situated in the heart of the Park will be run by Rainbow Families and aided by a grant from ‘Awards for All’. Based around a colourful carousel tent including a host of facilities available to parents and children: circus workshops, face painting, Wild West themed arts, crafts, dressing up, exclusive toilets, dedicated seating area, buggy park, breastfeeding and baby change area. Though they couldn't get hold of a lion tamer, generous support from the Baby Rock childcare agency means there will be a crèche will be running 12-4pm, however please do not turn up on the day and expect to leave your child as places are limited, pre-book via www.rainbowfamilies.org.uk
Back again by popular demand...
- The Community Village sponsored by Barclays has more than 40 stalls and is where you can catch up with local/national charities, voluntary and community groups.
- The popular Pride Members' Area is back. Free to all Pride member's, or £30 to non members on the day. The garden and bar are a great place to sit back, people watch and mingle. Delicious hot food will be provided by Coriander Restaurant and Deli in Hove, they will be serving a choice of South African inspired vegetarian and meat wraps with a donation to Pride for every order.
- All the Bars on Preston Park will be selling the same drinks at the same prices so you won’t get ripped off. And at these prices there is no reason for you to leave the park: 500ml Kronenbourg, Fosters or Strongbow - £3.50, single spirit and mixer - £3.50, glass of wine - £3.50 or double up for a £1.
Please support these bars as they support Pride: Cabaret Bar next to the Cabaret Tent, Dance Tent Bar next to the Dance Big Top, LGBT Student/Pride Charity Bar in the Market area (Club Revenge will donate all the profit of this bar equally to Pride and to local University LGBT societies (LGBrighTon & University of Sussex LGBTQ)), The Pride Members Bar hosted by Buddies which also has a non Members garden and bar, Revenge Pop Bar next to the fun fair, Vavoom Bar situated right next to the Community Platform, Women’s Bar hosted by Girls on Top, as well as “official roaming bar traders” who will always carry an identity badge.
