Phil Starr dies
Brighton mourns the loss of legendary cabaret performer

Phil Starr dies

Wednesday, 19 October 2005

It is with great sadness that we report Phil Starr's death yesterday afternoon. Phil was hugely loved by so many people in Brighton and far beyond. There was a great sense of shock around town last night as people try to come to terms with such a loss.

Everyone's sympathies will, we're sure, go out to his partner, Perry, and his close friends.

We invite you to add your thoughts and comments to this page.

A poem dedicated to Phil Starr:-

Goodnight Phil Starr goodbye

A Starr has just gone out
In the Brighton sky
A legend @ Legends
Bowed out and said goodbye
A performance fit for a Queen
A special lady
On the majestic scene
Good bye and god bless Phil Starr
You will be surley missed
In the Cabaret Bar

Dockyard please hold her tight
Say hello from all of us
And hold on with all your mite
Sundays will never be the same
Without her
Without her famous name
But in heaven there?s a new girl in town
Golden wig wearing a sequin gown

Even though I didn?t know you phil
Inside you made me smile
I always loved to watch you perform
You were kind, caring with your unique ,witty style
You had many friends around
In many a City and in many a Town
You will be surley missed that?s true
Our hearts got broken
We had much love for you

A Starr has just gone out
In the circuit sky
You were truly number one
Goodnight Phil Starr goodbye.

Phil Starr, I first met Phil in the east end in 1991 and became friends with him after a trip to brighton with Dockyard Doris in the early 90's. With a push from them both I later went on the stage for a while adopting the Eileen name. I will miss Phil greatly as I do Doris. His comic intonation and timing were second to none , he was a legend in his own life time, as often referred to as, THE DOIYEN OF EAST END COMEDY. Good night phil and keep them laughing in eternity. God bless you Perry.

I just wanted to say what a very sad loss it is to hear of the death of Phil Starr. He was a great performer.I first saw Phil at the Queens Arms 15yrs ago, took to him at once he never picked on any one in the audience until he got to know them,I then made the sandwiches for the piano bar and got the name of Camilla's kitchen, then the name stuck, wherever we were it was always the lady Camilla. Well Phili am here to tell you I hope you are now having a great time with Dockyard Doris and Alice Harlequin and all i have to say now is good bye to a great friend until we meet again, God Bless Jerry (Lady Camilla)

Although some 6000 miles away from Brighton in Mexico, it was with great sadness I heard of Phils death. I often sit on the beach here on a sunday and listen to the Five Drag Diva CD recorded a few years ago. It reminds me of those wonderful sunday afternoons in Brighton when Phil amongst others would entertain us in Legends. His mastery of his craft was beyond description, the number of times I have heard the Donkey Joke but still laugh every time or "The Old Bazaar in Cario" is own. Truely there is another Star in the sky tonight and he will be truely missed by those in the UK and by those of us abroad. God Bless Phil.

I remember what you told me Phil... "baby girl style comes first, f**k all the rest!" Nice one!

Absolutly Irreplaceable, a tremendous artist, such a special kind man. I am deeply upset to hear the sad loss. You inspired me and gave me many evenings of fun and laughter. You are the BEST and I will never ever forget you.

God Bless Phil

I was very shocked and saddened to hear of Phil's death last night.I still can't believe it.He was a true star and profeesional and will be sorely missed.I have many happy memories of seeing him around the bars and going to the pantos he used to do at the Brick Lane Music Hall. This truly is the end of an era,he was one of the last old style drag queens.Rest in peace Phil.
