Brighton Festival 2008
Tuesday, 1 April 2008
It’s big, it’s Brighton and it’s back. Yes Brighton Festival England’s most progressive mixed arts festival is back this May with an unrivalled programme of the highest calibre. The three-week programme is packed with theatre, dance, music, performance, books and debate, family and outdoor events. There really is no excuse not to get cultural in Brighton this May.
Brighton Festival has a growing reputation as the most exciting commissioning and producing arts festival in the UK creating work specifically for and about Brighton. It offers a unique programme of the highest quality, celebrating both locally based Brighton creative talents as well as showcasing the best national and international artists. The Festival also delights in exploring unusual spaces in Brighton for its site specific performances. This year is no exception with events taking place in a range of locations across the city such as Dyke Road Rest Gardens, Tru nightclub, Wild Park and St Anne’s Wells Gardens as well as major venues like Brighton Dome, Theatre Royal Brighton, Fabrica gallery and The Basement.
Highlights are many as Brighton puts the fabulous into festival. Look out for – and book tickets now – for Orlando Gough and his vocal group The Shout as they join forces with choreographer Luca Silvestrini (Protein Dance) in a highly engaging World Premiere of Happy Together or take a peek at An Infinite Line: Brighton: a day installation with multiple cine projectors revealing a landscape in constant flux. Dance highlights include Ballet National de Marseilles and Chunky Move whilst musically you’ll be spoilt with Manic Organic, Still Black Still Proud, and Miriam Makeba. Also shining in May is the rather brilliant books and debate programme with Gore Vidal, Oona King, and lawyer Clive Stafford-Smith hand in hand with exclusive Festival talks from Pet Shop Boy Neil Tennant, Jarvis Cocker, Keith Allen and the director Mike Leigh. The artistic and lets be honest – house noisy – will enjoy the annual Artists Open Houses – 1000+ houses crammed with canvas, ceramics and every artistic intention in-between. Add a four day children’s’ literature festival, the much loved free outside events including the Children’s Parade, The Big Splash and the wonderful Burst Pipe Dream from The Bureau Of Silly Ideas and Brighton Festival 2008 looks like being the best yet.
