review

Electro-rockers Ladytron became the most recent band to play Concorde 2’s famous Boutique club night. Electro music has had a tough time recently; it was touted to be the ‘next big thing’ last year but this buzz surrounding it seems to have died away. However, a few acts have survived the dwindling media interest and have crossed over to the mainstream. Ladytron are one of these bands. While not huge, they have a big, dedicated following and after seeing them live I can see why.

Ladytron made us wait until half twelve to begin their set, however we were treated to some great electro music to keep us occupied before the main attraction. When the band finally decided to grace us with their presence the crowd were already in full swing. Dancing not moshing was the order of the night and this came as a welcome change to most gigs at Concorde. The first drum beat of opener 'Cracked LCD' sent the crowd into a frenzy. Manic dancing ensued as the band played many of their big hits including crowd pleasers 'Blue Jeans' and 'Playgirl'.

the band remained
effortlessly cool

The audience remained animated throughout the set. This turned the venue into the sweat-box that we have come to know and love. However, the band remained effortlessly cool; they seemed totally unaffected by the large crowd, preferring to keep blank expressions on their faces and concentrate on playing good music. Dressed entirely in black they epitomise the trendy electro scene. However, tonight was not a case of style over substance. Ladytron have the music to back up their hip, sometimes aloof, image.

Encore song 'Seventeen' was the peak of the band’s set. The song illustrates Ladytron’s ability to write catchy, simple pop songs with a cool edge that is lacking from many bands in the charts at the moment. After the band finished, the night was not over. We were treated to some more great music and most people ended the night thoroughly wasted. A good night was had by all and Ladytron really impressed. Catch them live next time they’re in town, you won’t be disappointed.
