review

We were treated to three very different bands at the Concorde during this early show. Headliners The Subways are a bluesy rock trio who have had a dramatic rise to fame. They made history by being the first unsigned act to play Glastonbury’s Other Stage, an unprecedented move in the festival’s history. They are made up of two guys and one feisty girl and there is clear sexual tension between lead singer Billy and bassist Charlotte.

The band scored a major hit with their single Oh Yeah, a catchy, short burst of commercial rock which is reminiscent of C’mon, C’mon by Detroit rockers The Von Bondies. However The Subways have a distinctively British edge to them which adds another level to the bluesy sound of many of their Detroit based contemporaries.

"The Maccabees play bass-driven
driven rock with lots of spikey
guitar for good measure."

First band on were The Maccabees, a Brighton based band who originate from London. They were excellent, perhaps the best of the night. They play bass driven rock with lots of spikey guitar for good measure. Being first band on tonight meant that The Maccabees played to a relatively small audience. However they were excellent, deserving to play to a packed out Concorde. The lead singer put in a stellar performance, dancing around the stage in a jerky way that made him look like a reincarnated Ian Curtis. They treated us to many brilliant songs including one about a swimming pool in South London which has a wave machine! The band put in a great performance and I would recommend that everyone makes an effort to see them live.

The Pipettes were on second. They were a very different band to the two others playing tonight. Dressed in 50s style dresses, this three piece girl group also had a band of preppy looking boys playing instruments. However, the girls were the focus; they sang 50s girl group music... a few of the songs could easily have been lifted from ‘Grease’. They were also heavily choreographed and danced just as you might expect a band would singing this kind of music. The Pipettes were fun but possibly not the right band for this particular gig. Much of their quirkiness was lost on an audience who had come to rock. Roll on The Subways…

"The band played a raucous
set much to the delight of
a very animated audience"

When the headliners finally appeared the Concorde was packed out. The audience waited in anticipation for them and they did not disappoint. The band played a raucous set much to the delight of a very animated audience. The amount of crowd surfers was indicative of just how much the audience got into The Subways' loud, brash rock. The band filled the Concorde stage even though there were only three of them... From their stage-preseance alone, t's clear why they've had such a meteoric rise to fame. A huge amount of energy that the crowd laps up. The band played a set of crowd pleasers including singles Oh Yeah and Rock & Roll Queen. The audience responded to every note of their music and the band reveled in the attention.

A good night out was had by all. So, did The Subways rock? Oh Yeah!
