Mark Thomas - A Work in Progress...
review Mark Thomas is a regular contributor to the New Statesman and also has his own TV series. His brand of humour is unique in that it doubles up as a social commentary - gently pointing out the outrageous hypocrisies going on in the world. Mark is the perfect antidote for political apathy. This endearing, warm, even cuddly man turns political activism into a fun pastime. From the reviews I had already read I was expecting a lot of swearing and wondered whether I might pick up a new word or two. Tonight though, the language seemed pretty mild to me, although a certain knighted star that has been in the press a lot lately was subject to a few choice words. The gags and stories were highly entertaining and relentless. The voices used to imitate the various characters – which were generally either the wealthy upper classes or policemen – sounded like either Boris Johnson or Vinnie Jones respectively. I could have listened to the Boris Johnson voice all night! Raffle prizes included a gas In the second half a raffle was held in support of the Smash EDO campaign with a range of dubious prizes including a gas mask and a pair of underpants donated by a Lewes prisoner! Only in Brighton… Tonight is the first of three gigs that Mark is performing at Concorde 2 entitled Work in Progress. This is preparation for Mark’s forthcoming tour. From the reaction of the crowd there tonight I would suggest he pretty much has the finished article already. The evening was great fun and a refreshing look at our mixed-up world. If you can then catch back at the C2 on the 18th/19th July.
