Tired of the prospect of never being to attend the glamorous, shimmering global event that is Miss World? Fear not, as Miss Transgender Brighton can offer you all that Miss World cannot! Perhaps you thought that solving world poverty was priority in a lady’s life, or that keeping those double Ds with her size 8 is the key to success and fame. Wrong. I kid you not, but if you’re looking for that glitz, that charm, that classic crowning and yeah, a bit of comedy along the way, Miss TG Brighton is the event for you.

On arrival it was clear that there would be a variety of contestants, dripping in a diverse range of costumes, dresses and... shoe sizes. Some complete with naughty nurses outfits, others in draping, flowing, saucy red numbers to get the judges dribbling with desire. Hosted by Sarah Gorrell of BBC Southern Counties Radio, the evening was full of surprises (for certain contestants, as well as the audience), and definitely a light-hearted event to bring the TG community (and their friends) together.

In this crowning there was no demure curtseying, trips to the Seychelles to explore exotic destinations and its contestants. Oh no. Miss TG challenges its contestants with a variety of physical activities through the wonderfully apt Drag Queen Olympics. Challenges involve bizarre balloon blowing games, hurdles, hoop diving and the classic egg and spoon race. All topped nicely with Sarah Gorrell’s comical commentary, a good laugh was enjoyed by all. This event was by no means meant for just one age range, bringing together people of the TG community in a variety of ways. Just as ages varied, so did the stages of people’s transformations – welcomed were the TG, cross-dressers, or those that just had a strong love for the essence of drag and all things gender bending!

Contestants ranged far and wide, from the sparkling Stilettos to glam lasses of Thailand. But it all came down to the smiley Melissa Lilac, crowned the winner of Miss TG Brighton 2005! Congrats!

1st place – Melissa Lilac
2nd place – Thairena of Thailand
Miss Mature – Alison Penn of Wiltshire (2nd year running)
Olympics winner – Amanda of Essex
Best Costume – Stiletto

Thanks to Sue of Lacies in Hove for organising the event that raised over £1000 to go towards Martlets Hospice and the Sussex Beacon. And here’s to next year’s glam event of tranni fun!

Hold on to that tiara Miss Lilac, the competition could be a little fiercer next year...
