So I get this text: "Pier crumbling! Get down there!" I jump on my bike, camera on my back. And I cycle through the wind and the rain to arrive at the pier at dusk... but it's still there. Must admit though, it's on its very last legs...

The curtains close on the the West Pier's final performance. With a last pyrotechnic sigh, smouldering wet ash filled the air and what little was left of the pier fell into the swirling sea. That's all, folks.

Love it or loathe it, the West Pier is still here. Just. Brightoners (and Hove-ers) have long got used to seeing the crumbling wreck disintegrating into the choppy waters. Over the last couple of years the demise of the Grade I listed building has been more spectacular than usual...
