review

Oh The Paddingtons, where did they get that idea from? Certainly not from that little-red-jumper-and-gingham-scarf-wearing bear. Oh no, none of that where these lads are concerned, not unless I overlooked his tight vests, drainpipe jeans and chain smoking years…

Possibly more consumption of alcohol and cigarettes and political musings than production of music came from tonight’s gig, especially from support band the Bar Mitzvahs. Having said that, the word 'vocalist' could not have been more fitting for the front man. From musings on his ear;oer attempts to consume alcohol on the pier to top tips on how to get the most from your voice - by wearing a volume inducing hat apparently... And then came the inevitable, arguments with the audience which, perhaps unsurprisingly, never goes down too well. I don't think it would be unfair to call him a drunken twerp who refused to control his tongue. Entertaining at first but when the Paddingtons' set was cut short as a result, I lost my sense of humour a bit.

Punk from one of the North’s freshest music mobs The Paddingtons - like being beaten with the attitude stick non-stop. These guys really know just the way to put their music across to the discerning audienc. If that means singer Tom Atkins keeping up his mean and moody front for the duration of their set, so be it. It just makes you like the guy more for it. This band may not be so well suited to the larger festival crowds, but it fits the Concorde perfectly, allowing us an insight to their world of gritty punk/rock vibes.

At times painfully skinny front man Tom Atkins leads us into believing the band are from London and I think he even forgets his northern roots when his attitude gets the better of him after Some Old Girl. That uncontrollable tongue theme has bled all over him too... or is it vice versa? Surely picking up on what Doherty exuded is not a good idea at the moment, is it?! But it appears this is where he feels most comfortable - especially after the show when the band retire to the bar for a couple, ahem, more drinks with their adoring fans - most of which being of the young female variety. Funny that.
