Phil Starr Tribute - First Half...
review
Lola kicked the show off with a couple of songs and then introduced a short video montage of some of Phil's work which included some fabulous black and white archive material and some more recent home videos of the man in action. We were then treated to some cracking performances from You, Me 'n' Him - a variety act with Paul James, Peter Anthony and Billy Knutt who put together a mega-mix of fifties singalong fun and anecdotes of their times working with Phil. A late pull-out by Boy George Experience had Jacqui Cann stepping into the breach with her astounding Alison Moyet vocals. Drag with No Name gave his all in his hilarious routine.
We were then transported back to the Piano Bars that Phil so often hosted, supporting local vocal talent which included Ricky Royale and was accompanied by some gentle joshing by Lola. The first half was soundly rounded off by the fantastic Katrina & The Boy, who haven't performed in Brighton since 1999 - their return was very welcome and here's hoping that they pop down again soon! Star Man was inspired, and Madonna's leotard got the review it deserved...
