It was cold, wet, windy and grey... hardly the most inviting of mornings to be setting out on a 13 mile run... but a record 3,122 people rose to the challenge in what was Brighton's biggest half marathon on record! The Sussex Beacon Half Marathon is fast becoming one of the biggest dates in any serious runner's diary.

This year the usual figure-of-eight course along the seafront was slightly amended, with runners coming out of Madeira Drive, into the Old Steine, past The Royal Pavilion, up Church Street, down New Street and Ship Street back onto the seafront to continue up to Hove, back down to the Pier, up Marine Parade to Rottingdean and back down again. Phew! It's exhausting just typing up the course details.... With driving rain and a very close atmosphere it really did prove a challenging course for the runners this year.

The event was a huge success and early indications show a fundraising total of over £80,000 for the Sussex Beacon.

The Beacon volunteers had been up and about since the very small hours of the morning making sure the event went without a hitch. We were there but an hour or two before the event and our hands were already freezing... big big congratulations to all the support workers for putting up with the icy wind and rain and helping make the event another huge success!

With the wind howling around our ears, the 2006 Sussex Beacon Half Marathon gets underway. The staggered start seemed to work very well, with every runner wearing a chip on their show so that timings were correct no matter how long it took you to cross the start line (within reason!)

If only the weather had been a bit kinder to us we'd have got some lovely picture postcard views of some of Brighton's landmarks to share with you as the run made its detour around the city centre for the first time this year.

Congratulations to everyone who made it to the end to pick up their medal, their banana and their goodiebag! And a big warm pat on the back to all the frozen volunteers who were there to lend a hand at the end!
