Kiss of the Spider Woman...
review
The Brighton Theatre Group have undoubtedly done it again. REALBrighton got a sneak preview of a few scenes from the current run of Kiss of the Spider Woman and we were absolutely bowled over.
Before anyone even sets foot on the stage the first thing that strikes you is how big a space they've managed to create at the Pavilion Theatre. To leave as much room as possible for the stage, the band has been split and is on two raised platforms above the entrance doors, linked by video so that they everyone can play to the same beat. Whilst this is likely to be a bit of a headache for the band themselves, to have them so prominently on show is a treat and adds to the experience.
The show itself is beautifully casted and stars Emma Edwards as the Spider Woman, fresh from her West End role as Madame Giry in Phantom of the Opera. What a voice! Molina and Valentin, the two other major characters in the story, are also both utterly captivating and couldn't have been better chosen for their respective roles.
This is a gritty love story, with plenty of comic and surreal moments and with fabulous songs frequently changing the pace. Two prisoners, a gay window-dresser and a Marxist revolutionary, gradually, reluctantly begin to see the world through each others eyes... the running theme being the struggle between emotions, relationships and desires with political idealism and activism. Whilst you could be forgiven for thinking that a show set within a prison cell could end up feeling claustrophobic, the intensity is frequently broken with a full chorus coming on with huge Cabaret style numbers.
Another unmissable show from the increasingly impressive Brighton Theatre Group... deservedly now one of the most respected companies on the South Coast.
