REALBrighton review
| A Prison Diary is Mike Darnell's adaptation of Jeffrey Archers book. Mike Darnell plays Archer, who narrates us through his experience of entering prison after his guilty verdict. This is surprisingly humorous at times, through Archer's own observations, and at other times the hard facts of prison life do strike a chord with the audience. You almost become sympathetic towards Archer at times (heaven forbid!), although he never once admits to being wrong, rather taking the line that he shouldn't be there. Mike Darnell carries off the performance fantastically. | ![]() |

Jamie Warren delivered a solid performance of Jonathan Rice's thought provoking and very intense Charlie's Angel. A tale of twin brothers; the homophobic Charlie and the gay Jimmy. Abandoned as children, brought up in a convent, they have turned to each other in early life and against each other in later life as the true nature of their relationship is revealed. This is powerful stuff as Jamie tackles the two personalities very well, although the gay character is steeped in some pretty dated clichés (a fault in the writing as much as anything) and has a slight Frank Spencer about it. However, the emotions run high and the audience become hooked in what are a series of emotional tirades. Avoid the front row unless you enjoy being picked on! | |
