Masquerading as idolised rock legends, hordes of girls falling at your feet... Being in a tribute band must surely be the best job in the world? You don’t even need to be able to write a song.

It takes a lot to be able to pull off a good enough show not to be lynched by a stampede of diehard fans, but these guys had obviously been doing their homework. They dressed like Green Day, sounded like Green Day and even had Green Day-like movements and facial expressions too. If you squint you can almost convince yourself it’s the real thing... Give or take a few lines sung in the wrong places.

They played well-loved songs from Dookie onwards (Hitchin’ a Ride, American Idiot, When September Comes, Minority, Welcome to Paradise…) and opened, as Green Day do, with someone in a big, scary rabbit costume drinking beer and gooning around to YMCA.

The band got people out of the audience to play their instruments for a song like Green Day do except, unlike the real Billie Joe, this one didn’t give away his guitar! They even ended with an encore of Good Riddance sang by Billie Joe by spotlight. Just about everything you need to make a carbon copy of a Green Day show.

The support bands were surprisingly good. Brighton’s punk quartet Finding Reason and the diluted metalcore band Youngsquire both gave strong performances of original material.

But the most entertaining band of the evening had to be The Texas Drag Queen Massacre. From the moment the singer entered by crowd-surfing in a coffin, it was obvious they would be good. They were clearly influenced by Wednesday 13 and The Murderdolls with make-up and stage décor of severed hands around their mike stands. Their performance included free condoms and dolls (during the song 13 Dead Girls) and many other stage props including a saw, a chain and a cowboy hat. A mix of cheese, glam, horror and metal, oh and with a little KFC chucked in too.

For £5, this was an exceptional gig, especially given the shameful ticket tout situation at the moment. Most Green Day fans won’t be able to afford to see their favourite band on their next UK tour, or will end up paying up to £300 a ticket on eBay. Okay, so it’s not the same as seeing the real thing - but at least it’s a chance for fans to thrash around to their favourite music played live, and at a fraction of the cost!
