Capdown etc...
review
I’m going to start with a little advice: If you go to a Concorde 2 “early show”, be sure to realise that it is exactly that. The first support band, Heroic Doses, were on ten minutes after the doors opened, meaning that by arriving at 6.30pm we’d already missed them!
Thankfully we didn't miss Japanese bubblegum-punk-pop girl band Spookey. Although we couldn’t hear the lyrics (perhaps they were sung in Japanese?), I’m pretty sure they were singing about relationships and love and other poppy themes. They’ve got some great riffs and are a cute and novel band with their matching t-shirts and big smiles. It’s not surprising that they recently played with The Pricillas.
Brighton’s Random Heroes have obviously built up a huge following in their hometown. A large gathering of flailing blokes (and a few brave girls) congregated around the stage to launch themselves at each other, generally inflicting pain and bruises upon themselves, pausing only for the occasional fist in the air and “woooah-ohhhhhh” bit of sing along action. The Heroes themselves were equally lively, launching themselves around the stage and obviously really into the music they were making, which is great to see in a band.
Bombshell Rocks were perhaps the heaviest band of the evening - although you'd still call them punk... They seemed like a kind of fusion of all of the different subgenres of punk, with a bit of Bad Religion in there too.
Capdown were headliners of the night and came on to a tightly packed audience. If they ever really were ska punk then they’ve definitely moved away from it now. Their music’s got a much harder edge, although I suppose there are a few elements of ska remaining. Judging by the amount of moshing, crowdsurfing and general dancing and nodding in the crowd though, their fans have clearly stuck with them.
Overall it was a very energetic night and a great way to hear lots of different types of punk music.
