review

Bourne Free is a Pride event with purpose. Only in its second year, the festival was set up in direct response to the prospect of a far right organisation threatening to descend upon Bournemouth and spread its homophobic message.

The first Bournemouth Pride last year was a relatively hastily put together affair, but was a resounding success. This year built on that success, and Bourne Free 2006 was a fabulous day and night of events with real party atmosphere.

It may not have been the biggest parade you'll ever have come across, but spirits were high and the reception was good from the crowds that gathered at the foot of Bournemouth Pier. Representatives from local LGBT groups were there with banners, whistles and balloons... Bournemouth promenade has never been so colourful!

The parade finished up at the Lower Gardens, where top acts took to the stage of the bandstand to entertain the crowd. There was plenty to keep everyone amused...

Just time to nip back home and change... oh and eat... before heading out to a couple of bars before the club. Our choice tonight was the Exchange and the Branksome - both packed and both a really good laugh.

A great venue for a suitably large Pride after party. Unfortunately we hadn't twigged that the theme was beachwear or I'm sure there'd have been at least six more boys in speedos out there...
