Juliette and the Licks...
review
As quoted on the band’s website: "The prototype for a female is that they're desirable, pretty to look at, predictable and safe", says Juliette Lewis. "That’s why my music is so important to me, because it’s the antithesis of that, it breaks the mould." Following this thesis, with several great movies and albums under her belt, Juliette seems like the perfect role model for feminists and young ambitious girls alike. She proves that you don’t have to conform to stereotypes in order to get to the top in life.
“I like to keep it hot in here”, demanded Juliette shortly into her set, wearing her undisapointingly tight and shiny trousers, headband and vest. Let’s face it; if it’s not outrageously tight and shiny then it’s not Juliette Lewis. And from leaping around the stage and into the front of the crowd in those trousers for a good couple of hours, it’s not surprising that she worked up a sweat. The Licks put out some rocking riffs which sound brilliant behind her gravely voice. Hot Kiss and American Boy were particular highlights of the set.
The support bands had a good reaction from the crowd. The Lodge fall somewhere between Jimi Hendrix’s Stone Free and possibly some of Muse’s Origin of Symmetry album. Humanzi give out some great riffs with bass and guitar in unison, however, they did use their synthesiser so much at one stage that for a moment it seemed like they were about to break into No Limit by 2Unlimited. A handful of dedicated fans were singing along and leaping around like nutters near the front. Obviously there were a lot more for Ms. Lewis and the boys. “You guys are f**king great – we really appreciate it!”, thanked Todd Morse, guitarist of The Licks, to the ever frantic crowd (ever frantic despite being rammed together like sardines).
Amongst some of the crazy banter between Juliette and crowd was the dedication of Bullshit King to the member of the crowd who shouted to her that they wanted her babies: “If I had babies then I wouldn’t be rocking and rolling up here right now, would I?... This is for you, Bullshit King!”.
Unfortunately, Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl (who plays on The Licks’ latest album Four on the Floor) wasn’t drumming at the gig; it would have been great to see the two stars collaborating live, even if it was highly unlikely to happen!
The Brighton date set The Licks off to a great start on their UK tour and the new material sounds fantastic. Four on the Floor is going to be a superb buy.
