review

With two albums under her soulful belt and already established as one of the UK’s top contemporary urban artists, Terri Walker adds an edge of sophistication and confidence on her eagerly anticipated album, I Am. The first single (and title track) of the album suggests much personal growth for a singer used to working on the sidelines with high profile artists, now ready to take the limelight. With a steady core of Walker fans, all fully acquainted with albums past and present, Miss Walker seems to have no worries regarding her growing fan base and success.

Strutting on stage with a microphone and 'fro competing with that of the legendary Miss Ross, Walker clearly holds a strong presence in any situation. Bubbly and outgoing, Terri's vocal talents range from soaring highs on ballads such as The One That Got Away to uplifting gospel funk on tracks like Ain't No Love. Citing a diverse range of influences such Whitney Houston, MC Hammer, Chaka Khan and The Eagles, Walker’s albums provide an array of aural delights from mainstream pop to deeper, more poignant tracks.

If standing statuesque and simply observing those on stage is your desire, perhaps this lady's shows are not for you. With impromptu jamming sessions arising throughout the duration of the gig, it seemed the perfect opportunity for the audience to volunteer for their own moments of on-stage fame. All in good flavour and with little pressure, Terri welcomed confident talents from the crowd to perform their own versions of her Ain’t No Love track, as well as her closing cover of Gnarls Barkley’s Crazy - her own version slightly more rockier and proof of her true vocal diversity.

Terri's new new album, I Am listen with itunes, is available now.
