Lewes Bonfire Night...
review
Bonfire Night is a big deal all over the country with most villages, towns and cities having bonfires and holding firework displays. But nowhere does it bigger or better than Lewes in East Sussex!
Five bonfire societies: Cliffe, Borough, Commercial Square, South Street and Waterloo are involved in traditional fancy dress street parades, each attempting to outdo each other with fireworks.
As well as marking the gunpowder plot (see below) the celebrations at Lewes also commemorate the occasion of 17 Protestant martyrs being burned in the town in 1555. What better reason to party?!
This year Lewes once again proved its reputation for the best Bonfire Night in the UK. The streets were heaving with people who wanted to watch this spectacular event!
A bit of background: On the fifth of November celebrations are held all over the UK to commemorate the defeat of a Catholic plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament and King James I. On that day in 1605, Guy Fawkes' and several of his co-conspirators were caught in the act of attempting to blow up the seat of the Protestant Parliament.
