What were you doing when you were 19? Were you writhing around on the floor of a nightclub with a sock stuffed down your silver lycra shorts spitting out lyrics at a thousand miles an hour to a backing track of your own music with a transfixed audience lapping up every moment?

No?

Thought perhaps not. It takes a very particular, peculiar talent to be able to make something like this work... Psychofags in Binbags is a rare glimpse inside the head of a disaffected teenager with big balls (or was that just a sock?) whose cult following (if a cult following is possible for a teenager) you will instantly want to join once you've seen him live. The boy is unstoppable and is picking up new fans as fast as he throws away his lines. He sounds like everything at once and nothing you've ever heard. He's fucking fantastic and there is no question you'll be hearing more from him... I want to have his babies - but I'll have to join the queue... so, it seems, do around 3,000 other people who have signed up as friends of his on the Psychofags Myspace page...

Follow that? Lo-Fi-Fnk gave it their best shot. I heard a rumour that the security staff on the door were wondering if these boys were old enough to get in - Leo and August look about 16, but in fact are early 20s. They sound incredible. Daft punk with a raw edginess about it that blows you away and leaves you wanting more. Just when you thought the sound system couldn't survive any more twists from the knobs on their keyboards, Leo screams "turn off the fucking limiter" - pushing the limit of what constitutes music, with tunes giving way to rhythmic sounds and pulses of synth swooping through each track. This shit is hot! As with any band worth their salt at the moment, you can hear some of their stuff by dropping in on the Lo-Fi-Fnk Myspace page.

Before, between and after these acts we were treated to a wired ride through some of the music that inspires bands like these, brought to us by Dolly Deluxe and DJ Frump. They're the kind of DJs that put on a record so fabulous that even they have to leave the DJ box to dance to it themselves! Every record a winner! And if you're not bouncing on the tunes then you could be chilling out at the back of the gorgeous Po Na Na club in one of the booths with friends, or playing twister, or connect 4 perhaps, chowing down on the take-away boxes of candy that are provided on each table.

Cavalcade of Pop really is yet another fantastic reason to live in Brighton.

loved it!

I loved this event because Lo-Fi-Fnk are one of my favourite favourite favourite bands, a bit like a gay Daft Punk but with nicer vocals. I also lost my virginity to Psychofags in Binbags (aurally of course). He was like a male equivlant to Peaches! What a performance!

about Po Na Na

Nestled beneath the converted Old Picture House on East Street is PoNaNa. Full of eastern promise, the interior is Souk themed, conjuring an image of decadence, the Pasha’s harem and Turkish delight with a twist of the burlesque.
