A hugely impressive 4,122 runner registered for last Sunday's Sussex Beacon Half Marathon and 3,022 runners actually completed the all new, all-road 13.1 mile course.

This is a major fundraising event for the Beacon, a care centre for people affected by HIV and AIDS. This year the funds raised stand at over £93,000, a total that is still rising. There is every hope that the total will break the £100,000 mark when all the sponsorship money comes in.

The winners were:

Men
1st : James Baker (Chichester Runners) : 1 hr 8 mins 33 secs
2nd : Robbie James (Lewes AC) : 1 hr 11 mins 17 secs
3rd : Ed Barnett (Aldershot & Farnham) : 1 hr 11 mins 43 secs

Women
1st : Gill Wheeler (Hailsham Harriers) : 1 hr 21 mins 41 secs
2nd : Kaye Ambridge (unattached to club) : 1 hr 23 mins 40 secs
3rd : Ulla Korenjak (Ryder Harriers) : 1 hr 24 mins 27 secs

Well done to all the competitors and organisers of this event - it's an extraordinary achievement and the event just keeps on getting better. The Sussex Beacon Half Marathon is fast becoming the premier running event in the South of England!

loved it!

Great day for Brighton, fabulous day for the Sussex Beacon. I love seeing all the effort people put in and their own personal achievement.
