review

This is a perfectly formed, priceless little 14 minute show in what is very probably the world's smallest theatre! Fringe Venue 18 has enough room for two people to sit comfortably inside with no room left for any cat swinging.

With Brighton's house prices rising almost as quickly as the sea level and with an increasing view that we are just another London suburb, this short comedy offers us an uncomfortable glimpse of what may be around the corner!

The curtains are shut and the show begins. We're transported to Brighton sometime in the future when the city of Bri-ho is now London's Zone 15 and the wind farm just off the coast floats upon the rising seas.

The action centres around a couple (played by Jason Hughes from This Life and Nina Wadia from the Kumars) who are looking for a little bit of bo-ho in Bri-ho. Their camp estate agent is keen to point out the merits of living so close to the shore in this bijoux dwelling, giving rise to lots of laugh-out-loud moments as they discuss the merits of living in a beach hut! "It's capsule living!", "The whole thing is Grade One listed - even the laminate floors... you don't get workmanship like that any more!", and one of my favourite lines from the estate agent (David Holt), "Obviously Bri-ho is a gay city, but we're very tolerant here!".

It's an absolute delight.

We caught the show's first two audience members emerging from the theatre at the end of the premier - they were wearing big smiles and after congratulating one of the authors and signing the book, they trotted over to the beach for some sunbathing...

Gite A La Mer was written by Damian Barr and Laura Lockington, produced by Brighton-based Sweet Talk. It's current run at Beach Hut 48 is free (courtesy of sponsor, Barratt) and you can catch it there until the 27th of May. They're already dreaming up another site-specific play for next year... watch this space!
