Wednesday13...
review
Tonight saw arguably one of the best line-ups and crowds Concorde2 has ever seen.
First on, The Texas Drag Queen Massacre returned to the venue with their new line-up and ever kitsch blend of glamour and horror. The singer made his signature entrance of emerging from a coffin armed with enough eyeliner, fishnet garments and bizarre stage props to fill a fetish shop as he unleashed his ghastly vocals over the band’s bassy rock sound. The band were clearly energized to be supporting one of their most influential idols.
Second, fierce Brightonian girlband McQueen took to the stage. The band have matured greatly over the past few years, producing a much heavier, more sinister and sexier sound, reflective in their newly confident and alluring image of Leah Duors prowling the stage in fishnet stockings, spitting out anger-fuelled lyrics in rasping screams, accompanied by Hayley Cramer’s spot on, pounding drumming, and Cat de Casanove and Gina Collins’ rocking guitars. With hook after hook and strong but womanly lyrics, McQueen show that girls can play instruments and make music and rock when they’re doing it too.
Headlining the night, although either support bands have the fan base to headline the Concorde2, Wednesday13 took to the stage. Wednesday appeared through the haze of smoke in his menacing stature, mass of dreads and an army of air punching fans. They opened with Home Sweet Home and Want You Dead, followed by an excellent set of old and recent songs such as Rambo, American Werewolves in London and Faith in the Devil. This was a gig that was potentially entertaining to anybody, regardless of whether they were a fan of the main act or not, mainly due to the intense atmosphere created by the enthralled audience.
