review

Where You Fit In is a new campaign aiming to tackle LGBT hate crime and encourage victims to come forward and increase reporting. Tonight the project was launched at R-Bar on International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia.

We heard from Chief Superintendent Paul Pearce, who now heads up Brighton & Hove Police and also from Cllr. Gill Mitchell from B&H City Council - both authorities pledge a huge amount of support for this initiative.

We then heard from Craig, who told us about his experience in being beaten in a horrific homophobic attack last year and how he reported the crime and what happened next. Craig felt extremely supported by all members of Brighton & Hove Police in his dealings with them throughout the investigation and criminal proceedings. The perpetrator was issued with a Reparation Order and offered the opportunity to work for a day at 3Sixty magazine. David Harvey of 3Sixty told us about the day and how the once-attacker researched an article on Ian Watkins (Steps) coming out before his Big Brother appearance. After this experience, the perpetrator offered to write a letter of apology to his victim.

Lisa Timerick and Detective Inspector Michelle Collins then told us about the current local police operation concerning LGBT hate crime and about this campaign.

Where You Fit In is a postcard and website campaign and is the result of Brighton's LGBT Community working together in partnership:

True Vision : Police Reporting
Sussex Police
The Community Safety Team
Pride in Brighton & Hove
REALBrighton.com
Brighton & Hove City Council
3Sixty Magazine
Brighton Bothways
Gscene Magazine
The Clare Project
Allsorts Youth Project
Dean Stockings
Terrence Higgins Trust

The Where You Fit In website, www.whereyoufitin.com has been put together and is powered by REALBrighton.com in support of the campaign.

Thanks go to R-Bar who very generously hosted the event and the meetings in the run up to the launch, Carl from 3Sixty who designed the printed campaign and Craig who travelled to Brighton to share his story which really does underline the need for this campaign.
