The Enemy...
review
A few months ago, somebody asked me if I wanted to see The Enemy. I really wasn’t sure... I hadn’t heard of them. To me they were just another band with “The” stuck in front of their name. But I thought I’d give them a chance. By the time the gig came around, it had completely sold out and The Enemy had become one of the most exciting bands in the current UK music scene.
The bands supporting The Enemy tonight were selected well. My Device produce angular and exciting guitar sounds which are performed with a passionate fury on stage. The second support act (I didn’t catch the name) were more rhythm guitar based, and had a summery, strumming nineties indie feel to them.
As weird as it may sound, The Enemy have a definite northern feel about them. Although theirs is more energy fuelled, occasionally elements of their music become reminiscent of the ilk of Kasabian and The Stone Roses. And although they are from Coventry, you could think they were from Manchester. Mainly because the singer has a bit of an air of ‘Liam Gallagher mouthiness’ about him. Seeing The Enemy reminded me of the first time I saw the Kaiser Chiefs. Many of their songs can be secured as guaranteed summer anthems, and already they have a large number of people singing along to each word of every song. You have probably heard their single, Had Enough, and can imagine how awesome it was to sing and dance along to at the gig (“He-ey, he-ey. What’s the matter with your fa-ace, fa-ace…”).
Often when a band have been touring for a while you can tell that the novelty of playing to a live audience has worn off. The Enemy still play every song with the energy and passion that they were written with; constantly moving around the stage, stage diving and being ever appreciative of the audience’s response to their music.
After the faultless set they played tonight, they are sure to be securing a few dozen album sales with each gig they play. They already have an enthusiastic support base; the crowd even started singing their songs when they went off stage to get them back on for an encore. And judging by the ticket sales, they probably won’t be playing venues the size of C2 again after this tour, at least not for a while. I’m relieved, then, that I did decide to check them out tonight, as I am sure are many other people.
