I've heard lots of good things about Gorgeous and have been meaning to go for ages, but somehow never actually made it... until now. And having recently moved to the spanking new superclub, Liquid, I'm very glad I've been.
The music was gorgeous, Hannah Jones (live PA) was gorgeous, the people were gorgeous and the venue was gorgeous too. Really gorgeous. I've been to a lot of clubs and this one is really quite unique. For a start, it's newly redeveloped and it's sort of round. Plus it's got white walls. White! When was the last time you saw a club choose white!? It's lovely. Sort of unusually light and airy. Particularly with the nice high ceilings - and their quirky 360º video projection around the top.
You can tell the owners, Luminar Leisure, have spent some serious money on this place - we're told £5 million - and it really does look like it. You're not allowed to dance with your shirt off though - a great shame, having witnessed some of the clientele - and there's no drinking on the dancefloor. I guess Luminar are just trying to look after their investment...
Of course, it being 1 July, smoking indoors was outlawed too. But a lovely little roof terrace allowed those who wished to, carry on outside... so long as they didn't mind a queue. I found it quite amusing that access was having to be restricted to 'one out, one in' as it was so busy up there!
On the downside, it was unfortunate that we had to evacuate the building tonight, just 10 minutes after our arrival. But better safe than sorry and, after 20 (thankfully dry) minutes out on the pavement, the staff did their best to get us all back in quickly. Also, somewhat bizarrely, the club shuts at 2am. Yes, really! Me thinks there could be an amazing opportunity for someone to start an after party... any takers out there?!
We're told that from August, Gorgeous is moving to the second Sunday of each month - partly in an effort to avoid date clashes with some other big gay events. We'll definitely be back soon and hope to see you there too!
