review

Richard from the Brighton Lesbian and Gay Sports Society led seven willing cyclists on a Pride week off-road bike ride. We met at Brighton pier about 6:15pm and headed to Saltdean via the undercliff walk.

It was a beautiful evening and before long we were heading inland onto the South Downs Way. I was on a road bike, which was fine for a one-off, but I recommend anyone joining rides like this to come on a mountain bike – your arse will thank you for it, believe me!

As well as beautiful scenery we weren’t short of dramas (this is a gay sports group after all!). John fell down a cattle grid and another member of the group suffered a sudden and spontaneous flat tyre. There was a great team feel to the ride and we all waited as our fellow cyclist pumped himself back into action.

I got caught behind some rather large cows at one point, but the thought of a cold wet pint at the end of the ride kept me going. We were aiming for the Amsterdam Bar & Bistro in gayland, but as we free-wheeled down-hill back into town, we settled at the Hanover (near the race course). It was around 8:30 as we dumped the bikes in the beer garden and embraced the easy chairs and alcohol. Ahhh!

loved it!

I wasn't there, but just wanted to say that having looked through these gorgeous photos (Alfie, you're a star!) I wish I had been... it's easy to forget what fantastic countryside we have around us, how accessible it is and that socialising after work needn't be just about going to the pub (although it's a relief to hear that the event ended with at least one beer!).
