Pride Games 2007 : Football...
review
Brought to you by Pride Games, the Manchester FA and the football teams of Manchester, today’s 5-a-side Football Tournament saw a number of visiting teams getting in on the action.
It’s a while since we’ve been on a football pitch and between us there were one or two more miserable memories of being last to be picked for the five-a-side team in school PE. Given that homophobia is still rife in professional football, it was great to see skilled LGBT players getting out there and doing what they do well without fear of prejudice. There’s a certain football team on the South coast who, presumably due to the town’s reputation to one of the UK's gay havens, are well used hearing the opposing supporters chant "does your boyfriend know you’re here?" The simple answer today was, "as a matter of fact he does – he’s over there!"
Men’s teams competing included Joga Bonito, The Dublin Devils, The Yorkshire Terriers and The Birmingham Blaze joining Manchester’s Village Manchester FC (VMFC).
Runners up were Dublin Devils FC, and congratulations to the winners, Village Manchester FC.
