Tonight saw the start of Dave Lynn's Cabaret Academy getting off to a flying start as the final lineup of students were confirmed. The acts participating on this inaugural academy course are Billy Mac, Candi Rell, Cherry Poppin, Connie Conway, Deborah D'Arcy, Gilly B & JJ, Just Jean, Lillie La France, Mercedes Bends, Minsky Rose Lee, Quinton Smith, Sasha, Steve Bustin and Straight Steve.
Already proving that there is considerable talent emerging on the scene, the acts include male and female vocalists, comedians and drag artistes from Brighton and London.
This first evening proved to be a very special event and in addition to Dave Lynn's ministrations, the students were treated to the considerable experience of David Raven (aka Maisie Trollette) who spoke of his life on the cabaret circuit and stayed to lend a helping hand. Next week, the guest mentor will be Stephen Richards (aka Lola Lasagne) and the following weeks will see more industry professionals lending their support.
Joining the team for the six week academy is Andy (aka Dolly Partem) of Trashville Tennessee fame, Sue, Rupert 'RubyRoo' of Fairylea, David Skinner (as company manager), James of REALBrighton and Tamzin (Dave's Manager).
Over the next three weeks, students will be honing their acts, cabaret technique and stagecraft, polishing their performances, gaining confidence and working towards two showcase events in October. The first will be a Press & Industry Showcase on Wednesday 10th October and the final showcase will be open to the public on Tuesday 16th October - both at Charles Street Club. Both events will be raising funds for The Sussex Beacon, a charity providing care and support for people affected by HIV and AIDS, of which Dave Lynn is a Patron.
Many will remember Dave Lynn featuring in Faking It where he appeared as a mentor to a Naval Officer given the task of becoming a drag queen entertainer. Since then, Dave has been asked by many budding performers for advice and mentoring, which gave him the idea for the academy. The academy was announced in July and nearly thirty applications were received with only 15 places available. After a selection panel process, the final 15 acts were invited to attend the first session.
Dave Lynn said of the evening:
"It's clear from the outset we have some incredible talent amongst the group, and stars will most definitely shine. I'm so excited about working with these acts - the showcases are going to be complete showstoppers!"
Dave Lynn's Cabaret Academy is supported by Charles Street Bar & Club (thanks to Chris & JP) and REALBrighton.com.
