Architecture in Helsinki...
review
There's a simplicity - an honesty about Architecture in Helsinki that is totally captivating - and this was perhaps even more true down at the Concorde II tonight than on their albums.
It was a night of smiles, laughter, lots of bouncing, beautifully crafted songs, trombone parps, steel drums and twinkly tunes that just seemed to make everything better.
It really is such a treat to see one of your favourite bands playing a few feet away from you - to know that they can hear it when you whoop for more and to be able to sing along with them as they play the songs that have been the soundtrack to your life for the last few months.
As well as playing us all plenty of songs from both In Case We Die and Places Like This ("Stranger Danger... when you gonna follow through? It's Five!" - I have no idea what they're on about either - but it didn't stop us screaming like girls for more!), they also give us their unique, sparkly take on Aussie 80's wonders Daryl Braithwaite ("Same old Innocence" ) and Mental as Anything's "Hey there you with a sad face, come up to my place and live it up!". Genius!
What a thoroughly lovely bunch they are! Brighton was the last date on their European tour and they genuinely seemed to be enjoying every note they played - perhaps because they loved the Brighton crowd ("You guys are great! I wish we could pack you up and take you with us!") but probably because they still love their music - even after touting it around all the live music venues for the last few months.
With the gig over, they walked off the stage and straight around to join the crowd at the bar to sign records, badges and t-shirts and just to chat - proving what we already suspected... what a lovely, unpretentious, talented lot they are.
I've got lots more unfinished notes from the gig, but I'm pretty sure that translating them into reasonable sentences won't help you get a feel for the night. Listen to a few tracks on iTunes, buy their albums if you think it's your sort of thing and let them put a spring back into your step and a smile on your face!
Architecture in Helsinki is a splash of cold water on your face on a hot day.
