Bent Double with Kerry Godliman...
review
Amidst red candle holders and quite a lot of red jumpers entered the host, Zoe Lyons. Hugely talented and instantly engaging with plenty of banter with the audience - her timely gags about facebook and Halloween went down a treat. The latter saw her sporting a generic black bin liner that must resonate with everyone’s childhood (unless you grew up in Chelsea) and had the audience bawling with laughter from the outset.
The first act, Steve Nallon, bombarded us with impressions ranging from my favourite nightmare, Ann Widdecombe, through to Alan Bennett. The quality of his impersonations was top notch, but our table felt that his choice of celebs was perhaps a bit dated. He did try to put a fresh take on his routine by dropping 'classic sitcom characters' into Big Brother. I'm sure his act was enjoyed by the (cough) slightly older members of the Bent Double audience.
The second act, Roisin, wearing a black and white striped top that took me right back to bananarama - kept up the high standard set by Zoe with a cucumber cool, Fox Mulder dry act - with lines like “Brighton’s very tolerant... except when it comes to wheat” hitting the mark squarely.
Another interval allowed me to re-locate exactly where my drink was (our candle had gone out) and Zoe introduces the penultimate act, Julie Jepson. Julie was far more bubbly and watchable than her self-proclaimed look-a-like Ellen MacArthur. Ellen Degeneres is perhaps more appropriate - given her lines about Lesbian Removals and the B&Q magazines under the bed.
The missing headline act, Topping & Butch, were supposed to be replaced by Jo Caulfield - but due to an unfortunate car accident (Jo is, apparently, fine - but her car isn't) - Kerry Godliman - a friend of Zoe's filled in. She did a superb job. Her quick-witted, fast paced style, reminiscent in some ways of Kathy Burke, provided a great end to a truly funny night. Jokes about swallowing always go down well!
Tonight's show was a sell-out, and quite rightly so. Bent Double is sponsored by REALBrighton - and we love it!
