Múm + Seabear...
review
I couldn't have been the only person to wonder what the turn-out would be for Múm at the Concorde 2 tonight.
The selfish side of me wanted them all to myself, although I wasn't quite as bold as the eager person who placed his stool in the centre of what is usually the press pit obviously hoping for a personal performance. For what could be described as experimental Icelandic folk music, it was hard to gauge what a following it might have. But this is Brighton. It is rare for little gems of a band to pass by without being noticed.
Supporting Múm was Seabear , another indie-folk band from Iceland. It can't be easy coming on to warm up the crowd, especially if the crowd is sill in huddles at the back of the room. But this gig was never going to be frenzied and Seabear did their job of relaxing us with some beautifully warm songs... It wasn't long till the scarfs were off and everyone moved in a little closer.
Seabear went through a variety of slightly off the wall instruments and with each new song a new face seemed to appear on stage - as members of headliners Múm just couldn't resist joining in. Finishing with Seashell from their debut album The ghost that carried us away , the crowd were encouraged to join in with the chorus. At this point pretty much all the members of Múm had joined Seabear's seven members on stage. It may have been this fabulous finish that convinced me to go buy their album as soon as I got home - a rare treat of a support band.
After a break it was time for the main act, Múm. Losing a lead singer and adding in two new ones will always change a band, and many wont feel the same. There is definitely a little more energy in the new album Go Go Smear The Poison Ivy , albiet a subtle one. The participation with Seabear and vice versa just shows how much they all love being on stage and playing music - and the new members were already used to performing through various music festivals. My favourites tracks were A little bit, Sometimes , Moon Pulls , Dancing Behind My Eyelids and the fantastic They made frogs smoke 'til they Exploded . They Made Frogs was amazing to watch, Seabear had joined them on stage and the audience was encouraged to join in by playing kazoos and harmonica which were on sale on the way in. This all fitted together to amazing collective of the whole room and dragged a band member to the front of the stage to do a solo... I want to say solo dance but it was more of a trance induced wigggle - a very special moment indeed.
The whole night left a permanent smile on my face, a cosy friendly gig full of warm songs.
