review

As the support band Kiato, or perhaps Kaito - some nice shouting and punk slide-guitar, however the name goes - round off their set, a shadowy, bespectacled, anorak-cloaked figure strides through the crowd, fingers thrust into her ears, glowering “why, the youth of today!” style at the stage.

One brief, nay magnificent, DJ set from Melita later (accompanied by some superlative dance moves from our DJ) the very same bespectacled lady is on stage fronting San Franciscan all girl “jazz-punk” band Erase Errata. What are the chances of that happening? Evidently she was being droll (or is mad as a box of frogs). Singer Jenny has lately been likened to Thelma from Scooby Doo, and indeed, if it wasn't for us meddling kids it seems she’d like to settle down with a nice spliff just about now. In keeping with the scratchy in-need-of-a-joint sound of their music, Jenny implores throughout the gig “Has anyone got any marijuana they can sell me?”. Help Shaggy!

I’m dismayed to note as they take to the stage that they’re not dressed up in synchronised outfits, as they are prone to do on tour - in fact, I feel over-dressed, which is an altogether unacceptable state of affairs. The lead guitarist is, however, sporting some becoming tattoos on the back of each arm, so all is not lost. As you might expect of a sassy all-gal San Franciscan band, the laydees love ‘em - which is why it seems strange there’s mainly a geezerly presence down the front. It’s a far cry from August’s Sleater-Kinney/Electrelane bash at the Old Market, where the gels were packed up to the stage like enamoured sardines.

Last time Erase Errata played in Brighton it was at a packed Free Butt, though maybe rather than move on to a Concorde size venue now, something mid-size like the Old Market would’ve been closer to hitting the spot. The Old Market worked so well for Sleater-Kinney/Electrelane, whereas the punters here have almost an embarrassment of room to dance. I’m waiting for someone to shout teacherly “You at the back, move forward!”.

They are pretty good - nice ‘n’ noisy, and musically quite adept, with virtuoso Jenny tootling on trumpet and recorder as well as singing. I recognised “Tongue Tied” - and so did everybody else by the sounds of all that cheering - but her vocals seemed to get a bit lost tonight. Never mind, as in all good episodes of Scooby Doo, the truth will out. Scooby dooby doo!
