Open Mic Night...
review
Pokeno Pies is a versatile little place. Not only does it serve up the best pies in Brighton (and, I noticed tonight, it has a selection of additive free locally made cakes and flapjacks for £1.40!), but upstairs you can find all sorts of things going on.
Whilst last night's Pride Pie and Lash event was packed with diners and drinkers enjoying the entertainment, tonight was an altogether calmer affair - with Dr. Sharif Mowlabocus and friends sharing an open discussion on sexuality in popular culture!
Sharif introduced the idea of our Queer Inheritance, talking us through the move towards a more sophisticated representation of gayness in popular culture... if all that sounds a bit heavy then it really wasn't - even I could understand what we were talking about! Questions like, "have we left behind the idea of gay icons - do we still need them?" and "what's the deal with gay men having female gay icons?" and comments like, "Section 28 did more to strengthen gay rights than anything else in the last 20 years" meant that lively discussion did, of course, ensue.
The Brighton and Sussex Sexualities Network meet irregularly and have promised to keep us updated with their events... so that we can keep you updated. Watch this space!
