I asked Bill if he'd come up with some words for tonight's performance and he sent me this: "Naughty Chair, Vera, snake woman, Katie the fire-juggler."
...It's lucky, then, that the night is safely etched in my memory - despite the unstoppable flow of Asahi that I seemed to put away during the evening.
The Udder Place is the UdderBelly's blow-up smaller sister and is actually surprisingly big once you're inside. It's really rather good - with great lighting and acoustics, and a handy bar in the corner... which possibly explains the bottomless pint I had. You may need a coat while you're waiting for the performance to begin - but once the doors are shut it warms up quickly.
The stage is set but the house lights... well they don't seem to want to go down. For the first 40 minutes or so we're left wondering if the show has started as various acts mingle with the audience in an altogether intimate fashion. At just before 11pm the lights do finally go down and we meet our greased-back gangly compere.
The house band, Naughty Chair, turns out to be very good. A kind of folky jazz sound which complements the acts perfectly. The photos, I hope, will tell their own story but we particularly loved Vera - the pensioner who performed some amazing acrobatics with a girl on her back (particularly enjoyed the walking-stick swallowing), the seductive snake woman, the fire-juggling Katie and the awesome stripping fetish unicyclist who went on to invite the audience to paint her with fluorescent paint. If I seemed a bit snap-happy at this point it's because I couldn't take my lens off her... and I doubt you'll be able to remove your eye from the page as you move through the images.
Voodoo Vaudeville is a rare thing... it brings the show into the audience and the audience into the show and gets away with it. We loved it. The Purple Cow is here - but you won't want to ignore its blow-up smaller sister!
loved it!
