The Rascals...
review
The Great Escape is a supremely well organised festival. We had a text this afternoon telling us that - due to another band cancelling - The Rascals had been moved to an earlier spot at Digital... which was great because it fitted in with our schedule perfectly.
The Rascals have been described as Pop noir but any suggestion that this lot are depressing is way out. This three-piece from Wirral started out as the Little Flames - but three of them left to go it alone as The Rascals.
The venue was already packed as they launched into their set with songs like "Ratcatcher" and "Does your husband know?".
A great, unexpected half hour of stuff - with an easily discernible influence from the band's hero, Scott Walker.
It was as The Little Flames in May 2005 - during a tour supporting The Arctic Monkeys - that Singer Miles Kane became firm friends with Alex Turner (Singer/Songwriter of the Arctic Monkeys). Sharing their love of Scott Walker and early Bowie - and after collaborating on a couple of Arctic Monkey songs they revealed in Feb 2008 that they would be known as "The Last Shadow Puppets".
The new album and single "The Age of the understatement" is fantastic - however, The Rascals are touring separately at the moment so catch them while you still can!
