Mr Gay Gran Canaria 2008...
review
Last month's Maspalomas Gay Pride Festival saw Manchester stunner Dempsey being crowned as the new Mr Gay Gran Canaria 2008.
Dempsey, 26, was into the second day of his holiday when he attended the Club Mancha pool party which was hosting the annual 'Mr Gay Gran Canaria’ event. Although he was initially only there to watch, his friends encouraged him to run for the grand trophy!
"I didn’t want to join in the event as I’m quite shy," explained Dempsey.
"I started thinking about it when my friends told me to enter, but when I saw some of the contestants that had already entered - some having bodies to die for - my nerves were completely blown and I was backing out! However a good friend of mine, Noel, made it impossible for me to say no, so I entered... and now I am very happy I did!"
Twelve contestants made it onto the stage for the final showdown, answering questions, posing their physiques and parading themselves to an eager 500-strong audience who had gathered for the event. But it was Dempsey who walked away with the title of 'Mr GC 2008’, a cash prize and an automatic entry into this years Mr Gay Europe competition in Budapest this July.
"Although I’m nervous as hell, Gran Canaria gave me a lot of confidence which I think I'd been lacking since being involved in a car accident. The next competition in Budapest will be a great experience and I can’t wait, I just hope my nerves hold up."
Now back in the UK, Dempsey is celebrating his victory with his boyfriend Ali, and gearing up for the next competition in a couple of week’s time.
Dempsey moved to Manchester in early February this year from his previous east coastal hometown of Skegness.
For the past few years he was recovering from being run down by a car which caused him to be very ill, confused and lacking in confidence. Since starting his new life in Manchester, Dempsey, happy and proud to be gay, has made a lot of new friends and is ever growing in confidence. He's a keen hairdresser.
Family and friends from both home and abroad will now be routing for Dempsey in the upcoming Mr Gay Europe contest, and though I’m sure he will do well with that award winning smile, puppy dog eyes and dashing looks, one things for sure, he’s just glad to be a part of it!
