What better way to spend a day than to jump on a bus with a bunch of gays, sip at some bubbly and explore the history of the city!
The adventure started at Popi Caf´, without a doubt the most famous gay teashop in Antwerp, where Johan Sips - the owner - greeted us in a Titanic Captain's uniform and took us on a city bus tour through the historical centre of Antwerp.
An open-air double-decked bus strung with pink balloons and guided in English (thankfully!) took us through all the interesting sights of the old city in a very queer fashion! The trip was fabulous and was obviously made all the more special by the Champagne served up by some very steamy seamen!
Highlights for the Real City team include the fabulous Antwerp Zoo (apparently one of the oldest zoos in the world, with over 4,000 animals and lots of 19th century design and architecture), the very Thames-like River Schelde, the magical Het Steen (The Stone) which is a small medieval castle on the banks of the River Schelde, the slightly slutty Red Light District which is pretty small and right in the centre of town (near Falconplein - in case you happen to be looking for it...) and the glamorous Diamond District which is an area with countless jewelry shops, as well as the Antwerp Diamond Exchange - arguably the most important financial centre of the world's diamond industry.
As Johan's slogan tells us: If you feel gay, you're Popi! We agree... Though we've no idea what it means!
