REALBrighton review

A glorious day for a race... perhaps a touch on the chilly side, but there were few complaints from the runners this year - and the sunshine even put in an appearance.

Each year the Sussex Beacon Half Marathon grows both in numbers and in stature on the UK's running calendar, being voted - as it was - in runabroad's "101 races to do before you die"!

It takes a huge amount of organisation to pull off an event this size so congratulations are due not only to every runner who took part, but to every volunteer, every sponsor, every company involved and to everyone at the Sussex Beacon itself for making it happen.

With preparations almost complete, as the last of the fencing is put in place, as the water, fruit, t-shirts and goody bags were delivered to the finish line and as the last of the volunteer stewards headed out around the city... all that remained was for the runners to get moving!

With a record 6,000 having registered for the 2009 event, Madeira Drive was absolutely heaving this morning! As the mayor sounded the start of the race, people of all different shapes, sizes and ages took to the road for a good cause, many also raising sponsorship money for the Sussex Beacon itself.

With the half marathon under way and the 6,000 or so runners disappearing into the distance it was time for the youth races. Shorter distances for smaller legs, but every bit as competitive!

The Sussex Beacon Half Marathon isn't all about crossing the finish line... on the way there runners can take in some of the sites of the city including the Royal Pavilion, the new Jubilee Library, some of the North Laine shopping area, the Theatre Royal, the Town Hall and - obviously - plenty of time to enjoy the sea breeze along the prom!

Many, many congratulations to everyone who took part in the race this year. For some it was simply getting around the course in one piece that was the challenge, whilst others were obviously looking for personal bests or... perhaps even to take away one of the prizes.
