So much to fit in to so little space! Where do I begin? At the beginning I guess...
Today's event at the Jubilee Library was something of a landmark event.
It must have taken quite a skilful bit of negotiation to end up with a football pitch in the middle of Jubilee Square, and yet further organisational skills to see the unveiling of a fully kitted out new football team - the Justin Fashanu All-Stars - sponsored by Norman Cook. There must also have been a fair bit of courage involved for the players stepping out in the centre of Brighton in their bright pink shirts, shorts and socks to kick a few balls around... With representation from the FA and with media crawling all over them (this was the top story on the BBC news website for a couple of hours on Sunday morning), the boys took to the task of tackling homophobia in football with gusto! The Justin Campaign (www.thejustincampaign.com) was inspired by the only ever out gay professional football player, Justin Fashanu... a really great idea and an albeit sad story that should be very easy for most people to relate to. As well as a stall of Justin memorabelia there were stalls from BLAGSS, Spectrum and other organisations there to support the event.
Follow that? Unbelievably... the afternoon rolled on into an evening event inside the library that was an absolute joy! Film screenings, an evening of live music headed up by the lovely Nicky Mitchell and a table football league was born, played and won in a few short hours - hosted by the outrageous Johnny Woo. If you weren't there... well, where were you? It can't have been half as much fun as finding yourself in the Jubilee library screaming at the top of your lungs as a mini glitterball shoots across a pink table football table and turning around to find two nuns with stubble snogging in the Religion section.
Let this be an annual fixture in Brighton's Winter Pride calendar - please oh please oh please!
