review

When asked to remix Britney Spears the Scissor Sisters reportedly responded: "Britney's about as clever as a box of hair and she's just too trashy. We just don't take Madonna's sloppy seconds”. How could you not love this band? But before we get to the wunderkids of freaky disco, first let’s brave the supports...

When you hear the name Ping Pong Bitches you might be forgiven for anticipating laydees with a very particular party trick; they are however nothing of the sort (shame on you). Now dwindled to a twosome, Ping Pong Bitches are a bratty low-rent Shampoo in high heels chanting soulless electro-rap. I’m sceptical about PPB reputedly causing a riot when they played Southampton, unless it was people stampeding to the bar / toilet / anywhere else but here, for the love of god...

Then came Syntax. Massive Attack meets iffy 80’s rockers The Alarm, and that’s all you need to know. Thank gawd then for the Chaos Rocks DJs who lend a cohesiveness and stamp of quality to any such night and whose sets were infinitely better than the warm-up bands. Tonight their soundsystem’s bass is so deep the regency woodwork’s rattling and it feels like it’s giving your organs an internal massage. Building up the Scissor Sisters’ entrance Steve Chaos whips on Prince’s ‘Let’s Go Crazy’ which makes me wanna dance like...like Molly Ringwald in ‘Pretty In Pink’ goddamnit, and then there they are bouncing before us like the lurid spirit of The Rocky Horror Picture Show risen from the grave.

Frontman Jake Spears is all wiry Iggy Pop physique and wild eyes, instantly engaging and loving every minute as he giddy-ups across the stage in his inimitable disco-gallop. Tonight he is minus the purple PVC dungarees he wore on Top of The Pops but sporting alas a dodgy fox fur. He has no qualms however about causing a commotion, recently telling Popjustice website how he’d love to get his hands on David Beckham’s giblets and inviting lads to email him at jake@scissorsisters.net because “I need some hot dates while I'm here in the UK”. Ad-libbing and gyrating with frontwoman Ana Matronic, the flame-haired ball-busting tattooed dame, they are a prepossesing double act and when she commands the audience to “Scream like you’re in NYC!” they obediently give a strangled “Yearghhh!”. They are flanked by keyboardist Babydaddy, guitarist Derek G and drummer Paddy, who seems to have brought his own squealing fan club along.

The crowd? Well, there’s quite a few funky goths, a lot of man-made fabrics and eccentric accessories, and some well-scrubbed muscley gay lads you could take home to meet mother, dancing politely. The latter are not the only gays in the village tonight by a long shot though, for all the flamboyant moxies this town can muster have turned out tonight. When ‘Comfortably Numb’ kicks in the place erupts ecstatically. How will they follow that? With their own fabulous disco tune ‘Filthy / Gorgeous’ of course, as if to show that they can cover, but they can also go one better. The album has heavy flavours of Elton John, more than a hint of the Bee Gees and and a certain Heaven 17 nose - none of which on paper makes for an appealing musical bouquet in my book, but in the flesh has it's own charm. I may forsake them in the future, swap them for something more indie perchance, but I cannot deny that live they are kind of irresistible.
