In fairly torrential rain, Elton John's partner David Furnish unveiled Romany Mark Bruce's bronze sculpture, 'Tay'. David had spent the morning with local HIV/AIDS services including the Sussex Beacon and spoke eloquently on the stage at the unveiling. He was joined by Gscene's James Ledwood - one of the projects driving forces, Paul Elgood, Simon Burgess and the artist Romany Mark Bruce - all of whom spoke a few words to the slightly bedraggled but cheerful crowd.
Romany Mark Bruce has given much of his last two years to the project - free of charge - and has overcome what could have easily been insurmountable difficulties along the way to finish the piece. The project required half a ton of clay before a mould could be made in order for the bronze sculpture to be cast.
The finished sculpture now sits tall at the top of New Steine Gardens and is uplit at night... the hope is that this will provide a focus for everyone whose lives have been touched by HIV/AIDS.
'Tay' is the only AIDS memorial in the country.
