Gary Jules...
review A Gary Jules gig is the last place you'd expect to witness an audience member throwing up through their fingers and vye for a toilet cubicle with shagging punters, but curiously, it was so. Spotting Gary and his bandmate backstage before the gig sitting silently amongst the nibbles had seemed a more likely indicator of the evening's mood - a crowd waiting pensively for That Song before buggering off. How wrong I was.Live, Gary Jules' soft Michael Stipe-esque vocals are warm, rich, and married with lilting harmonies, recall a Byrds-y Simon & Garfunkel. His dry, amiable banter was endearing enough and his own songs sufficiently enchanting to delay indefinitely the airing of 'Mad World'. There was however the odd interruption of "Play your single!" (from the woman who went on to throw up through her fingers) and the girl next to me answering her mobile: "Yeah! I can't, like, talk right now cos I'm, like, watching Gary Jules and he's, like, quite cute...". When it comes, that blockbusting Tears For Fears Christmas-Number-One-claiming 'Mad World' cover is poignant and surprisingly affecting. He sheds his guitar, the lights dim and he stands there humbly like a child reciting a poem. 'Mad World' is a fine song and his cover a still, melancholy revelation that leaves you realising you've been holding your breath for the last 3 minutes. A few songs along the way the anticipated post-Mad World stampede hasn't happened, transfixed as the crowd are, and Gary offers a modest: "Thanks for staying to hear my stuff!". Well, it's the least we could do for the man who saved us from a Darkness Christmas Number One... For more on Gary Jules go to www.garyjules.com.
