My first Pussycat...
review
It's Saturday night and I decide to be very unstudious and delve deeper in to my overdraft by going out. The reason for the Saturday nighter was to celebrate Rob's birthday by going to his second favorite hangout: The Pussycat club. (His favourite is a little further past Concorde on the left hand side.) This was my first taste of the Pussy and my expectations were high, being their ninth birthday and all the good stories I've heard.
Personally I was disapointed. It may have been I set my expectations too high. I was initially knocked back by the smell of pure sweat - admittedly often a sign that the music is sending everyone into a frenzy... or just that the air-conditioning has packed in?
The Pussycat attracts a large and diverse crowd, many just dancing on their own towards the DJ or climbing the barrier to dance back at the crowd. There was no space for intimate groups and it felt very restricting and over-packed. There didn't seem to be much diversity in the music either, despite there being three rooms to choose from.
For a birthday I feel it lacked the element of surprise or creativity that similar large clubs such as Wild Fruit always deliver. There was nothing out of the ordinary, nothing particularly new. They had some good dancers and decor but feel that the admission fee was much too high for what
you get. Even my faithful NUS would only reduce the admission by a measly 50p.
It's easy to be too hard on a night so I'm willing to cut them a bit of slack in the end. Often it can be your mood or alcohol consumption that helps you form an opinion on how good a night you've had. Although I wouldn't dismiss ever returning I'd have to think very carefully before parting with my pennies again.
