Bootlegs, mash-ups, call ‘em what you will - these bastardised mixes are stealthily taking the nation by storm, a whole scene blossoming around the delights of the irreverent marriage of two (or more) hitherto unsuspecting tunes.

It all started with 'Bootylicious vs. Smells Like Teen Spirit’, and 2 Many DJs’ Radio Soulwax 2 - or maybe it started before that, with Jive Bunny, or even before that, with Stars On 45. Whenever - with an industrious underground community generating inspired mash-ups a’ plenty, it’s little short of a goddamn musical revolution.

Tonight sees the first Brighton Bootleg Club at Concorde 2, and what a game line-up - there’s Lionel Vinyl, Pojmasta, Gameover, and Freelance Hellraiser is headlining. He created revered mash-up ‘A Stroke of Genius’ (Christina Aguilera vs. The Strokes) which had a huge ‘cease and desist’ order slapped on it by Christina’s killjoy record label. Some of his source material is a wee bit esoteric, so sounds more your usual club fayre, though a speedball of Placebo’s ‘English Summer Rain’ vs. Cornershop’s ‘Brimful of Asha’ works a treat, as does Pink’s ‘Trouble’ married with LCD Soundsystem’s ‘Yeah’.

For me though king of the evening is beefy lad Elektric Cowboy. Frankie’s ‘Relax’ should forthwith always be matched with the Eurythmics' ‘Sweet Dreams’, I won’t have it any other way. “He’s the Meatloaf of beats," Ben remarks, and he’s quite right.

It’s a true old skool Brighton night with townies and gays and gay townies and club kids and students and old-timers, all getting down for a good old-fashioned disco hoedown. Of course in two years when Top of the Pops is nowt but mash-ups we’ll be sick to the gills of it all. In the meantime, let the decks spin, the fingers twiddle, and the bootleggers stay one cheeky step ahead of the music industry...

The next Brighton Bootleg Club is on August 2nd at Concorde 2.
